This is a statement that I believe in.
Why then, once engaged, have I so intensely felt the pressures of tradition and questioned my values and priorities? After many months of balancing excitement with confusion, I have settled on a theory: I'm developing my Bridentity.
Our identities are formed and reformed throughout our lives. Luckily, we live in a day and age where as women, we can be anything we wish to be, with no need for apology. We can even re-create ourselves, inside and out, at will. I have known myself as many things. I have been a daughter, a girl, a student, a lover, a sister, an aunt, a friend, a girlfriend,an artist, a professional, to mention a few. And now I am someone's fiancee and soon to be a bride.
Don't get me wrong. This journey is not strictly introspective. My inner aesthete is delighted at the prospect of all the pretty things that come along with weddings!
So what does all of this mean? That is what I am hoping to find out.
